Volvo to Go All Electric by 2022
Volvo on Wed announced that every vehicle it launches from 2022 will have an electrical motor.
The move marks "the celebrated end of cars that only accept an internal combustion engine (Water ice)," the Swedish car maker says. In other words, "there will in hereafter be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, every bit pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced past Ice cars that are enhanced with electrified options."
Volvo plans to launch five fully electric cars between 2022 and 2022, three nether the namesake brand itself and two from Polestar, the company's performance car arm. Volvo will also offer gas and diesel fuel plug-in hybrids, besides equally "balmy hybrid" 48-volt options on all models.
"People increasingly demand electrified cars and we desire to respond to our customers' electric current and hereafter needs," Volvo'south President and Chief Executive, Håkan Samuelsson, said in a statement. "You lot can at present choice and choose whichever electrified Volvo you lot wish."
The company aims to sell i meg electrified cars — and take "climate neutral manufacturing operations" — by 2025.
Meanwhile, Volvo is also aiming to bring fully autonomous vehicles to market in the next few years. The company has been testing its democratic vehicles in Australia, where it's encountered a particularly challenging obstruction: kangaroos. Volvo Commonwealth of australia's Technical Manager David Pickett told the Australian Dissemination Corporation that the unusual way the marsupials move confuses the company's democratic vehicles.
"When it's in the air information technology actually looks similar information technology'southward further abroad, then it lands and information technology looks closer," Pickett said, according to the study. The company is, still, confident it can solve the problem, and says the issue won't filibuster the rollout of democratic vehicles in Australia.
